Liefe and Haydee Temple, sisters ages 13 and 10, will bake and price items for the sale, and will be on hand to greet and help customers. They will also have information about the work that Safe Passage does in Guatemala. The bake sale features wide variety of baked goods from chocolate chip cookies to homemade granola to pies. Traditional Guatemalan drink, rosa de jamaica, made from hibiscus flower and cinnamon will be served. Also for sale this year are Guatemalan handcrafts including bookmarks, notebooks covered in traditional fabrics, and typical market bags. Anyone wishing to donate baked goods can contact Liefe and Haydee at 542-0505.
“Guatemala is special to me because I was born there,” says Haydee, a fourth year student at Children’s House Montessori School in Camden. “This spring, I went back for 6 weeks with my mom and Liefe. We got to meet Damaris and two of her her sisters. They go to Safe Passage. We took them out to breakfast and shopping for a new outfit. We rode in a taxi and it was fun.” The Temples have sponsored students at Safe Passage since 2007. The Temples also support Safe Passage by donating the spare change left behind at Clean Bee Laundry. Liefe is a seventh at Islesboro Central School on Islesboro. She plans to volunteer at Safe Passage on a service trip as soon as she is old enough.
Liefe and Haydee hope to raise at $800 from the bake sale. Last year they sent $775 to Safe Passage.
Safe Passage empowers the poorest, at-risk children of families working in the community of the Guatemala City Garbage Dump by creating opportunities and fostering dignity through the power of education. It was founded in 1999 by Maine native Hanley Denning.

We love mom! Starting on May 1, Clean Bee Laundry is celebrating moms all week long with tea and treats at the Bee. Thinking about a gift for a special mom? A gift certificate for wash, dry, fold! Seriously, chances are Mom has the earrings she really likes and doesn’t really need a World’s Best Mom sweatshirt or another coffee mug. Give her what she wants: help with the laundry!

At Clean Bee, we strive to make every day an Earth Day. Did you know that we started our laundry lives by opening a diaper service from our home? When we got to the point where we were doing laundry almost 24/7, we knew we had to branch out. Rather than get a commercial space, we opted for a laundromat where we could share our love of cloth diapers with anyone and everyone. It took a while but now folks know that Clean Bee Laundry is the place to go not only to do laundry in a community focused atmosphere, we’re the area experts on all things relating to cloth diapering.
To celebrate Earth Day, Broo designed a few banners – you’ll see them hanging at the Bee – to highlight other ways that we do – and you can – tread lightly on the planet without compromising looking good or being clean. By eliminating paper towels with washable cloth rags, reusing and repurposing metal hangers, and purchasing powdered detergent in bulk, you won’t be inconvenienced but things will be a little lighter, a little simpler.
