As of July 2015, Clean Bee Laundry has given over $2,392 in spare change to Safe Passage.
Please talk to us to learn more about this wonderful organization.
Maine native Hanley Denning went to Guatemala in August of 1997 to learn Spanish, never imagining she would stay. She had been teaching in North Carolina after receiving her master’s degree in education from Wheelock College and was frustrated by her inability to communicate with her Spanish-speaking students. Upon arriving in Guatemala, Hanley began volunteering with children and adults living in small towns near Antigua, Guatemala, in an effort to improve her Spanish. One year extended into two and just as Hanley was preparing to return to the United States in 1999, a good friend named Regina Palacios urged her, as a favor, to accompany her on a visit to the slums adjacent to the Guatemala City garbage dump.

July 1 – 14. That’s right. Free. Clean Bee is celebrating America’s birthday – the very act of which gives us a moment up here on our own little soap box. We like Charlie’s so much that we think you should try it – for free. Bring your laundry, bring your friend’s laundry, load up a washer or two and help yourself to a scoop of Charlie’s Soap – on the house. Like it so much and want to bring some home? Help yourself to a healthy discount on a jar of Charlie’s Soap Powder. Cleans just about everything: from false teeth to diesel engines. (Neither of which should go in our washing machines, btw.)
All Charlie’s retail products will be on 10% off during this time as well. We carry the Soap Powder (refills too!), Liquid Detergent, Power Packs (similar to laundry pods only they work better and look nothing like candy), Oxygen Bleach, Hard Water Softener and Laundry Pre-Spray.
Some background info:
After just a week or so of running the laundromat, we realized that the Tide vending machine was more hassle than it was worth. We had to purchase little boxes of soap powder which customers would use and then throw away. The boxes had either too little or too much detergent in them, causing machines to either over-suds or underperform. We had to make a change – for the better. So we took down the vending machine (adios, thanks to Craigslist), invested in a drum of Charlie’s Laundry Powder, washed and filled several liquid detergent caps with pre-measured tablespoons of Charlie’s: the Soap Bar was born! No more bumping heads on the vending machine. No more ridiculous packaging. No more oversudsing machines. And best of all – customers love it! Laundry is getting much cleaner with much less environmental harm.
Charlie’s Laundry Powder is a revolutionary approach to laundry care. It does not cover up stains and odors with scents and brighteners – it really cleans. It is made with a unique blend of biodegradable coconut-based detergents and high-grade, completely soluble, Green River washing soda. Charlie’s Soap products are made in America.
The 2.64 lb. refillable jars of Charlie’s powder we sell can do up to 80 full/100 medium wash loads. That’s just pennies per load! Needs only 1 tablespoon per large wash load – That’s all! Charlie’s is hypoallergenic, leaves no residue, and is perfect for babies and those who have sensitive skin. (Think: cloth diapers!) It dissolves completely and is biodegradable. The powder is more convenient and portable than a liquid and is front-loader/HE compatible. Charlie’s also makes an other laundry and household products worth celebrating. Next time you’re in, ask us about them.

*** UPDATE *** Liefe and Haydee raised $775.76 for Safe Passage this year! Yes, you read that right – seven hundred seventy five dollars! They’ve sent out thank you notes to those who were so kind to help out and are in the process of sending the money off to Safe Passage. They’re delighted to have far exceeded their goal of $450.
Clean Bee Laundry and the Temple family are hosting the sixth annual bake sale to benefit Safe Passage on Saturday, June 6, from 9 a.m. to noon at Clean Bee Laundry, next to Renys in Camden.
Sisters Liefe and Haydee Temple, ages 12 and 6, will bake and price items for the sale, and will be on hand to greet and help customers. They will also have information about the work that Safe Passage does in Guatemala. Joining the girls in the efforts this year will be the Rock Coast Rollers. The bake sale features wide variety of baked goods from chocolate chip cookies to homemade granola to pies. Fresh salad greens from Hatchet Cove Farm will be available as will coffee and drinks for children. Anyone wishing to donate baked goods can contact Liefe and Haydee at 542-0505.
“Guatemala is special to me because I was born there,” says Haydee, a third year student at Children’s House Montessori School in Camden. “And when I go back, I like to visit Safe Passage with my family. This time when we go back, I’m going to get to meet Cindy, the girl we sponsor and we’ve been sending her letters and chapter books in Spanish. She just turned 12.” The Temples have supported Safe Passage in many ways over the years – from bringing extra toothbrushes in their luggage when they travel to Guatemala to donating the spare change left behind at Clean Bee Laundry to sponsoring students. Liefe is a sixth-grader at Islesboro Central School on Islesboro. She plans to volunteer at Safe Passage on a service trip as soon as she is old enough.
Liefe and Haydee hope to raise at $500 from the bake sale. Last year they sent $473 to Safe Passage – more than enough to host an ice cream party for all of the students and staff.
Safe Passage empowers the poorest, at-risk children of families working in the community of the Guatemala City Garbage Dump by creating opportunities and fostering dignity through the power of education. It was founded in 1999 by Maine native Hanley Denning.

We really do consider Earth Day to be every day at Clean Bee. We package all of our wash, dry, fold orders in either reusable, washable laundry bags or reusable plastic bags. We don’t shrink wrap our finished product – your clean laundry – because we feel that the packaging should be able to be used again. We use any left over dry cleaning bags as garbage bags. In fact, in 7 years, we haven’t had to buy a single garbage bag. Here are some other things that we’ve been doing to tread lightly on the earth…
